What is Didrex®?
Didrex is a weight loss aid medication. Didrex is the branded version of the generic medication benzphetamine hydrochloride and is available throughout the United States. Didrex is an appetite suppressant which helps patients lower their calorie intake as part of a weight loss program. Didrex is chemically similar to but not the same as amphetamines.
How does Didrex work?
Didrex stimulates the central nervous system with the known effect of suppressed appetite. It is unclear as to whether Didrex also affects other areas of the central nervous system or the metabolic function.

What is Didrex prescribed for?
Didrex is an appetite suppressant available throughout the United States. It is intended to help the excessively overweight and obese reduce their calorie intake as part of a weight loss plan. Patients should also keep to a regular fitness schedule for optimal weight loss.
Who should Didrex be prescribed for?
Didrex is designed to be used by people who suffer from exogenous obesity. Exogenous obesity is caused by high levels of food consumption and lack of exercise rather than a medical illness that causes the patient to gain weight. The active ingredient within Didrex is benzphetamine hydrochloride, which is a controlled substance and available on prescription only.
Who should not take Didrex?
Didrex tablets should not be used by patients with:
- symptomatic cardiovascular disease
- moderate to severe hypertension
- hyperthyroidism
- known hypersensitivity or idiosyncrasy to sympathomimetic amines
- glaucoma
Didrex should not be given to patients who are in an agitated state or who have a history of drug abuse.
Didrex should not be administered to people taking any other central nervous system (CNS) stimulants.
Pregnant, breastfeeding or women who plan to become pregnant whilst or soon after taking Didrex should inform their doctor as Didrex may cause harm to the fetus or infant.
Children under 12 years should not take Didrex.
Caution should be taken if Didrex is taken by those over 65 years of age.

Can Didrex be habit forming?
Benzphetamine hydrochloride (the active ingredient in Didrex) is chemically and pharmacologically similar to amphetamines and can be addictive if abused.
Recommended Didrex dosage
Didrex 50mg is usually taken once a day 30-60 minutes before breakfast. An individual's response to the drug should be monitored by a doctor and then of dosage Didrex adjusted if necessary. Didrex is a short term (a few weeks) prescription diet drug. Didrex should not be taken for prolonged periods of time as the desired effect will lessen as the body becomes accustomed to it and adjusts. The dosage should not be increased as the body adapts to Didrex but instead treatment should be stopped. Didrex can be habit forming if abused.
What should I tell my doctor before taking Didrex?
Before taking Didrex tell your doctor if you have any of the following:
- Heart condition
- Are allergic to Benzphetamine hydrochloride or any of the inactive ingredients found in Didrex. Also tell your doctor of any other allergies you have.
- If you are currently taking any other medications, both prescription and non-prescription.
- Are pregnant, nursing an infant or planning to become pregnant.

Didrex is the branded version of the generic medication benzphetamine hydrochloride. Benzphetamine hydrochloride was developed by Pharmacia which was acquired by pharmaceutical giant Pfizer in 2003. Pfizer continue to sell benzphetamine hydrochloride under the brand name Didrex throughout the United States.
