Hello all,
My name is Tonya. I've been on phen for about 4 months. I have lost 27 pounds and i have been taking one pill each morning, as my doctor prescribed. He also just added another 5 refills! should i be taking these pills that freely? His advice was to take them as needed. But should i continue taking the pills for a longer period of time? The labels and instuctions asked that we use it no more than 60 days. Has my doctor gone phentermine crazy?!?!? And i still have 10 pounds to loose.

I voted but I just wanted to tell you that the reason it says not to take it no longer than a couple of months is because phen is supposed to be temporary. You are supposed to take it to get you started with weight loss, get you going again with weight loss or help you make your weight loss goal. You can't depend on phen alone and after a while it will lose it's effectiveness.
Good luck!

I've not heard anything about taking Phentermine for longer than 60 days. I have known people to take it for longer periods. I have heard of Phentermine being addicting. Staying within normal guidlines and supervision of your doctor should be all you need. Hope this helps.
I've been taking Phentermine for 7 weeks.

Naughtyangel...
I did not say that i depend on it. Of course i'm eating healthy and excersising, that is all apart of loosing weight, i don't think that it's possible to loose weight without those 2 key things. Do you?

Naughty...
That's exactly my point, if it's so temporary why is he giving me so many refills. My question was how long was i supposed to be taking it.

My doctor said three months and then you need to give your body at least a month's break.
it will lose its effectiveness.
if you are off it for awhile and then restart, you should feel the same effects. that's what my doc said.
good luck.

I think you should talk some more with your Dr.. If you only have 10lbs to lose ..why is he giving you so many refills? I just started on Phen 15mg and I 1 pill a day in the am.. I've been on it for three weeks as of this upcomming Friday.. and I've lost 9lbs without excersing.. My Dr. said she is taking me off it in two weeks..even though I'm doing great..she dosen't want me to get adddicated or have it lose its effect..She will be switching me to Xenxial for a month and then back on Phen...(she feels this is a way to use my new eating habits that I learned since being on Phen.
She said this is her way take it or leave it..I'm taking her way...Plus she watches my blood pressure and I take a water pill prescribe by her.. I am 243 lbs and 5'6.. may I suggest you speak to your Dr. some more on the refills..
If you feel comfortable with him then ask him..
Good luck with the 10lbs and never be afraid to ask your Dr. what your thinking..afterall your paying his salary.

Hi There,
I am new to Phentermine too, but I work in Pharmaceutical Research and know the FDA labeling process fairly well. The reason that Phentermine is only recomended for short term use is because that is what has been tested in clinical trials, submitted to and approved by the FDA. A drug maker can not label a drug for a use which has not been tested and approved by the FDA; however, Drs. can prescribe drugs freely for uses other than those on the "approved" label. This can be both good and bad. For example women had access to Prozac for the treatment of PMS long before it had been labeled for this use. On the other the combining of the 2 drugs to make Phen-Fen proved to be terribly dangerous.
Best advice, talk to your Dr., research as much as you can on side effects, etc. and make an informed decision based on your personal need.
I hope this helps.
Good luck!

I have been using phentermine since November and I have lost 30 pounds. I am switching to Meridia and hope this has an equal effect. Phentermine is only supposed to be used temporarily. It loses its effectiveness after a couple of weeks. the rest depends on you acquiring better eating habits within those couple of weeks.
started 316
current 284
goal 150
I HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!

hello, to answer a little of your question maybe, I have been on phentermine since, October 2002. I started at 258 pds. I am now at 195. So I have lost about 63 pounds. I am going to take it as long as it takes me to get to goal of about 170. Also I take it during the week but dont take it Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Also a lot of the time I only take a half of the 30 mg pill. I might switch to Prozac in a couple of weeks. I also walk 40 minutes every night and lift weight or do pilates 4 times a week. Cut portions in half and don't eat after seven o clock. So I hope this helps a little. They say effectiveness wears off so sometimes I will go 4-5 days without taking a pill.

Ive actually found that 1 pill every 2 days works pretty good too, the effect seems to linger.
I may try the "cut-in-half the dose" thing too. Also, breaks are good. Theres some good advice in this thread.

Mommy of 4 the effectiveness of phentermine does decrease over time... however it does take longer than a few weeks - it'll just feel like it's not working anymore as your body will stop having the side effects.
I stopped taking phen except for the odd occasion and when I do take it the headaches are back worse than ever.
For those of you worried about the addictiveness of phen... don't it's not addictive but then again I suppose it's always possible someone could abuse it and take massive doses. I do know that here in Oz truck drivers take it in massive amounts to stay awake - some doctors should be shot.

Maybe I am missing something. I read a reply that said something like phentermine has Prozac in it. Is this true?
